the egg fritz hansen
the chair that i am sitting in is the newro chair that i have been working on for the last two years and in spanish we will callit "rrro" - it’s like taking a break. i like this idea that fritz hansen use danish words. it continues this philosophy of trying tocreate with the minimum the maximum on all the levels. it means that firstly this is not just design to reach a form or design just make something sculptural or make something that really attracts attention of a lot of people. it is not a piece that wants to scream, it is a piece that is built from the beginning with the idea of simplicity. the funny thing is that when i got the brief from fritz hansen they just told me to do a comfortable seat.
you can imagine: a comfortable seat, what is it? fritz hansen has always made importantdesign, so for me this was a real exercise of design and creativity. to sit down andthink about a seat - a comfortable seat. the type of chair that i wanted was a chair that has the position, the comfort, the slimness, the lightness, and at the same time the capacity to say come here, sit down and relax. when you see this form that is very anatomical, it resembles the body and this neck and this shoulder and the back that comes out again.those leg refined legs in aluminum that just melt together with the shell. all these details can only be possible if there is an expert behind. fritz hansen are the best doing upholstered chairs.
they are very good - they are very good at making the most complex shells. so i challenged the company and said: “let's make it even more difficult - let's make theshell go in, then out, then round like this. from the top it goes around. from the backit goes around. from the side it goes around." this is the biggest nightmare equation tosomebody who does upholstery. i think with this chair, the first thing people will appreciate is quality. they will go “this is well stitched all other" it's all flat and perfectlydone all stitched in the right way with the right detail and this is where things getbeautiful. this is where things come to their splendor. they go from idea to function, andthen they end up with the quality on those
little handmade details that make up somethingunique. so when you see it, in a lobby of a hotel or in a house it has to provoke attentionwhere you like really want to discover it. this is a chair that is about one and a halfseat, the one and a half low position is a very important proportion to the way we use it. for me the roâ„¢ chair is a contemporary chair that fits in all places without havingto be made for a specific type of sector. there is a lot of different uses for the chair- private and commercial. this chair tells the story.
